SOME OF OUR FAMILY FROM PHILADELPHIA WERE AT THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON ON 8/24/2013

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON

Ralph Herbert, Jr., Earnest Herbert, Jr., Aaron Herbert and Christopher Calloway went to Washington, DC on Saturday August 24, 2013.

Ralph reports his experience there was awesome. It was such a good feeling to be there to commemorate the historical event. He says he is proud of how far we’ve come but still there are miles to go. He was very happy to share this experience with at least one of his sons; he wishes his son, Andrew and daughter, Amy had been there also.

Aaron felt it was a definitely an epic experience being there. He always admired Dr. King, what he stood for and his sacrifices to our country. He feels that every African American of all ages should visit the Martin Luther King Memorial. Aaron said he feels so inspired after attending this 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.

Earnest Herbert and Christopher Calloway were excited and proud to attend such a monumental event also.1241285_10200425805475106_241172627_n1082398_10200425439065946_1563790697_n

+++++++++++DEVYN M. HERBERT

Aug. 2013 049

Devyn reports she had a good experience at school last year, received good grades and is going into 11th grade at Parkway Center City High School. She enjoyed working this summer at Watoto Summer Camp with children from K-2. She learned to have patience and is looking forward to working at the Camp next summer. She will be working again with Watoto’s after-school program week days.

Devyn said she enjoyed a trip to NYC a few weeks ago. She loves New York: the bright lights, tall buildings and the fast pace. She says she can see herself very wealthy  living in NY in a fabulous loft apartment on Park Avenue! Lol, but really, she is quite serious!

NEWS FROM KYRA DENISE LYNN HERBERT

137aKyra says she had a good school year. She got all A’s & B’s except one C in math -her favorite subject. For various reasons this term she had 7 different math teachers which she didn’t like. She is going into 8th grade at C. W. Henry School and is looking forward to graduating next June. She states she’s had a very active year in things such as: softball, dance, art classes and activities with her Girl Scout Troop where they raised money all year. One of the goals of her Troop is for each member and a guest to go on a 15 day trip to Italy next year.   Kyra is looking forward to taking the trip with her Girl Scout Troop  to Italy with her mother, Denise.  This will be one of Kyra’s graduation gifts.

This summer Kyra attended the Moore College of Art in downtown Philadelphia which she enjoyed. Her grand mom was additionally proud and thankful that she was able to commute  safely by public transportation to center city like a “smart young lady.”  Kyra said she is looking into going to an ivy league boarding school for high school which she will present to her parents. The school has to specialize in math and the arts.   She reports that she has learned to cook, can cook: pork loin steaks, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts as well as  a few other things.  She is very happy she finally got braces a few weeks ago.

And finally, her cat who used to be a beautiful charcoal grey, is now a beautiful coal black. He is lots of fun!  Sometimes when they have trouble finding him around the house- he can be found in his bin of food that he somehow opens, feasting! Lol

Photos below are of  Kyra being recognized at the Fresh Artists Program at the School District of Philadelphia in June.   Prints of the Paintings were auctioned off as a fund raiser for under-privileged children.  She is shown standing next to her painting and with her mother, Denise Herbert.
