SARGEANT FIRST CLASS (E7) JOHN ROBERT HERBERT

Doc777John Robert Herbert retired from the United States Army in 1973 as a Sergeant First Class (E7) after 20 years of Service. He could have stayed on a little longer but he refused to train women. (Women were just being admitted to into the Armed Forces at that time- previously they were WACs or WAVES). John traveled widely in his stint which included his basic training in Columbia, S.C. and being stationed in Baltimore, M.D. and in Texas. He served 2 years in France; 2 years in Germany; Korea 1 year and 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. He was wounded in combat in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart for his bravery. John’s wife Mary traveled with him during many of his years in the Service, they married 7 years after he joined the Army. Overall, John describes his experience in the Service as positive.

THANK YOU JOHN R. HERBERT FOR YOUR DEDICATED SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY!!!

Devin & Jaionne 1989001 On July 22, 1989 Jaionne and Devin Haley married at the young age of 20 after meeting dating and courting through high school from the age of 16.

With Jesus Christ in our hearts and at the Helm of both our lives we took a step of faith on July 22, 1989. Since that time the Lord has gifted us with 4 wonderful children whom you have meet in recent posts. They each share our faith and love for Christ in their own personal lives. We together give Glory, honor and praise to our God who has kept us and our family over the years through struggles, trials and the tribulations of marriage and of life and we are truly blessed and thankful for what he has done and continue to do.

After 24 + years of being together and sharing our lives we salute Jesus Christ our savior, God the Father and the precious Holy Spirit for what is done and continues to be done in our lives and in the life of our family.
We are not and have not been perfect but we are yet being perfected, even until the day of Jesus Christ’s return.

Psalm 138:8
New King James Version (NKJV)
8 The LORD will perfect that which concerns me;
Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

+++++++++++++++RAYMOND LAKE, UNITED STATES AIR FORCE

147a (2)

Raymond Lake stated he enlisted in the United States Air Force toward the end World War II in 1945.  Because he was up for the Draft, his brother told him it would be better for him to enlist because if he was drafted it was possible that he might be put in the Navy which he didn’t want to do- for fear of being thrown overboard. Lol!

Raymond served his Country from 1945 to 1947. The Military was still segregated but he still feels he had a very good experience there.  He said he basically was taught by doing  the required daily regiments gentlemanly things such as how to handle his surroundings, keeping things in order and how to dress, etc.

He was stationed at bases in Atlanta, Georgia; Topeka, Kansas and Arkansas.  He received an honorable discharge upon completion of his stint in the Service. He states he is now enjoying the benefits of having served in the Military. Thank You, Raymond for your Dedicated Service to our Country!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^DARRYL MEETS DARRYL^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

DSC_2528a

. . . Two Darryl’s! They didn’t know it then but their grandfather’s had been good friends since way back in 1956 when Darryl Herbert’s Grand Pop, William Herbert, Sr.’s sister, Luecretia Herbert Haley dated and later married Darryl Fitt’s Grand Pop, Morris Haley. The two Darryl’s grandfathers had good family fun: they were both Prince Hall Masons, played pinochle and shared a garden for their family, but mostly they enjoyed going fishing together!

When the two Darryl’s met around 1991 in Philadelphia, PA, they were at their mutual friend, Damone’s house, paling around talking “men’s talk.” After awhile one of the Darryl’s mentioned he had to get home because he had to go to a cabaret that night. The other Darryl said he had to do the same thing because he was going to a Cabaret that night also. As they talked about where it was, etc., they began to realize they were going to the same Cabaret— their Family’s affair — WLH Family Cabaret!!!  One said “that’s my family;” the other responded, “that’s my family!” “Who’s your mother, who’s your father!?” they then broke out in laughter hugged at discovering they were cousins!  Lol!  Since then they have become great friends who share work (one is a general contractor and the other a master plumber!) and camaraderie.

They also have become great fisherman- going fishing every chance they get, just like their grandfathers did!
