This year, June 9, 2009, Corey L. Harris, grandson of Raymond J. and Mignon J. Wilson, Sr. graduated from Luke C. Moore Academy (High School) in Washington, D.C. He was the president of the senior class and a member of the National Honor Society. He was also the speaker for his senior class. His theme was, “The Tassle Was Worth the Hassle.” He will be attending P. G. Community College in the fall.

DARA WANTS TO BE A MEDICAL DOCTOR!

DARA ELIZABETH WILLIAMS HERBERT

Dara reports she graduated in June from George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science with a 3.7 GPA. She was a member of the National Beta Club, the National Honor Society and received a Merit Award for Academics and a Citizenship Award. In addition, she received a scholarship from the Prince Hall Masons (Uncle Ralph’s Masonic Organization), and from the Awbury Arboretum for her volunteer work, and an Academic Scholarship from Tuskegee University.

She started Tuskegee on August 26 where she is pursuing a degree in biology and pre-med. She said she really is enjoying herself and the work is not too hard, yet. She likes meeting new people from everywhere.

Zachary Bernard Lake, 14 years of age

Zachary Bernard Lake, 14 years of age had the opportunity to attend Tuskegee University, in Tuskegee Alabama as a scholar for the 2009 AriTREK/SciTREK Summer Program. This program is to prepare next generation students that are interested in becoming Research Scientist or Engineers. Students were selected based on GPA, Standardized Test Scores and Teacher Recommendation. Forty top students from Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina were selected to attend. Zachary was the only student selected from South Carolina. Zachary was able to do research on Genetic Diversity of Cowpea using DNA Markers. While at the camp students attend seminars in leadership, money management and life skills. Students traveled to Atlanta Georgia to tour “The America I Am” Exhibit by Tavis Smiley.

Zachary will be a rising freshman at Eastside High School in Taylors South Carolina this fall. He is the son of Gerald and Angela Lake, brother of Kayla Lake and grandson of the late Forest “Pig” Lake and Mary Ann Lake. Zachary plays football and wrestles for Eastside High School.

ALYSON IS PURSUING HER DEGREE!

“My name is Alyson Rayshella Micole Nelson. I am the child of Tammy Nelson and Forrest Werts, Jr. I graduated from Piedmont High School in Alabama on May 28th, 2009. My school was ranked in the top 100 best high schools in the World for the past two years as reported by USA Today Newspaper. I ranked #20 out of 70 students in my graduating class. I have begun college at Gadsden State Community College, where I am pursuing my degree in machining. I will be receiving $7,000 per semester in tuition assistance from the Anniston Army Depot.”

Terri Herbert reports that she and husband, Michael Herbert, Sr. will celebrate 8 years of marriage on December 31st, Lord Willing.

Michael completed a Plumbing & Heating class recently at Orleans Technical Institute where he received a 3.91 GPA. He currently works in heating & insulation for a company contracted with the City of Philadelphia. Terri is preparing to continue her education at Community College of Philadelphia this fall.

STUDENT AMBASSADOR, REGINA PORTER!

REGINA PORTER was elected as a Student Ambassador for the People to People Program this year. She had the opportunity to travel to Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The tour lasted 19 days. First Regina wants to thank God for giving her this opportunity. Regina was ecstatically happy, given this opportunity and would like to extend a thank you to all her supporters who helped her reach her goals.
She was featured in the Times Herald Newspaper of Norristown and Montgomery County, PA for this accomplishment. Regina is entering 12th grade at Renaissance Charter School where she is a member of the school’s Basketball Team, the Drama Club and also she serves as a Mentor to Elementary and Junior High School Students at her school. Regina is the daughter of Proud Mom, Shekia Bailey.

From Shonn- Greetings from Greenville, SC, Listed by names are our family’s accomplishments for the year:

Husband, RandyWon 2nd Place for BBQ in the Black Family Reunion Cooking Competition. He competes against chefs, restaurant and caterer owners. The event has over 40,000 people who attend this huge function. This is Randy and his brothers second time winning two years in a row!! The prize money was $700.

Charmayne – Starts 9th grade this year at Greer Middle College. This is a charter high school that will allow her to take college level courses. Once she completes school she will receive an Associates Degree while in high school. Charmayne also made the A/B honor roll for 8th grade!!

Alexia – Starts 8th grade this year. She has been placed in Honor’s English and she made the 7th grade A/B honor roll!! Alexia is an awesome writer and had one of her poems published in the school’s newspaper.

Isaiah – Starts 5th grade this year. He will participate in the schools single gender class.

Nothing new for me…just maintaining 🙂
