“Recently I went on a trip to the Dominican Republic with some friends. It was a great time, we went to the beach, saw the night scenes, and had some real Dominican food. I also was awarded the Co-Chair position for a program I am in at Drexel University called BRIDGE. It stands for ‘Building Relationships in Diverse Group Environments’. As Co-Chair, I am the leader of Executive Board Meetings. I help plan trips (Spring break trip) and other meetings for the program. I will graduate this June, 2016 Thank you image5Jesus! But other than that, nothing much has changed. I plan on enjoying the rest of my year at Drexel and look forward to future endeavors.”

^^^^^

BELOW IS AN EXCERPT FROM GARY’S WINNING ESSAY:

“In conversations with my elders, they stressed they didn’t have the opportunities that’s available to us today. My grandfather (Horatio Lake), shared with me, that after some schooling, the boys in his family had to work. This was either on the farm or in the military. Coming from a household of nineteen – seventeen children, a wife and husband to feed, was a lot! As an African American male, I believe that it’s important to strive for things that were not afforded to our forefathers. Education of any kind, yet the college experience and college education were by far an experience that my forefathers were not given the opportunity to experience. Yet something they wanted!  This alone, has been my motivation and encouragement to obtain the college experience and college degree. Based on the major news outlets, a high school diploma is not going to cut it today or in the future. In order for me and other young men and women to get ahead in the coming decades, we will have to hit the books and obtain a college degree.”

CHIEF PETTY OFFICER, RAYMOND WILSON, SR., UNITED STATES NAVY

Doc771

Raymond J. Wilson, 1970

Raymond Wilson, Sr. enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1955 and retired on September 29th 1974 after 20 years of Service.  He retired as Chief Petty Officer (E7).  He served during the Vietnam era in combat.  For 4 years he was aboard the oldest Commissioned ship in the Military – the USS Old Iron Side Constitution.  Raymond was the first African American ordered aboard that ship from June 1961 to June 1965 serving as a Personnel Officer during that time. There have apparently been no other African American Personnel Officers in that role since then. The ship is still in commission in Boston, MA

Raymond said he really enjoyed his time in the Navy with his wife and children.  He had two tours of duty in Washington, D.C. and they traveled around the world, across the equator.  He is now enjoying the benefits of his labor.

CONGRATS ON YOUR COLLEGE GRADUATION CHRISTOPHER W. HERBERT

DSC_1756Christopher Herbert, Jr.  says he’s having a good summer so far, mostly working. He is looking for a better job and wants to buy a car. He’s proud to say he graduated from college in March this year from The Art Institute of Philadelphia with an Associate’s Degree in Digital Film Making and Video Production. He feels blessed that he’s living in his own apartment but would like to go back to the days when he would fall asleep on the couch and wake up in his bed, no concerns- a time when he had freedom and no responsibilities: he didn’t have to cook, clean, wash clothes or pay bills, Lol. He wants someone to carry him- he wants to fly, but doesn’t want to have to flap his wings, he just wants to soar.  Lol. He said his parents used to say ‘enjoy your youth while you’re young,’ “but I would always say to them, I can’t wait ‘til I get grown!” A bit of advice he would like to give to all of his young cousins is to “live and enjoy your life and don’t worry about what other people are doing! At the end of the day, what they’re doing won’t help or hurt you. Follow your dreams!”

(Posted on FB 3/23/2013 by GM Mary Herbert-) below- Congratulations to our #1 Grandson, Christopher (Kareem) Herbert, Jr. on his graduation yesterday from The Art Institute of Philadelphia. Here are some photos that I shot last night. We had a great time celebrating! The cute pic of ‘Young Reem’ shown at his 1st graduation from kindergarten in 1995- at Small World Discovery Center was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer Newspaper
