^^^^^^^^GARY HINKLE, II – WLH SCHOLARSHIP WINNER FOR 2013

Gary Hinkle, II Scholarship winner 2013                                                                                                                                  Posted 10/9/2013

***GARY HINKLE, II OF THE WASHINGTON, DC CHAPTER  was the Winner.  (He is the Son of Gary Hinkle, Sr. & Debbie Lake Hinkle)

Runners up for 2013 were:

Madeline Jones- Greenville, SC – 1st Runner Up

Zachary Lake – Greenville, SC

Charmayne Edmunds – Greenville, SC

Jaylan Davis – Columbus, Ohio

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SCHOLARSHIP WINNER AND ALL OF THE RUNNER’S UP FROM OUR FAMILY

^^^^^

BELOW IS AN EXCERPT FROM GARY’S WINNING ESSAY:

“In conversations with my elders, they stressed they didn’t have the opportunities that’s available to us today. My grandfather (Horatio Lake), shared with me, that after some schooling, the boys in his family had to work. This was either on the farm or in the military. Coming from a household of nineteen – seventeen children, a wife and husband to feed, was a lot! As an African American male, I believe that it’s important to strive for things that were not afforded to our forefathers. Education of any kind, yet the college experience and college education were by far an experience that my forefathers were not given the opportunity to experience. Yet something they wanted!  This alone, has been my motivation and encouragement to obtain the college experience and college degree. Based on the major news outlets, a high school diploma is not going to cut it today or in the future. In order for me and other young men and women to get ahead in the coming decades, we will have to hit the books and obtain a college degree.”

NEWS FROM KYRA DENISE LYNN HERBERT

137aKyra says she had a good school year. She got all A’s & B’s except one C in math -her favorite subject. For various reasons this term she had 7 different math teachers which she didn’t like. She is going into 8th grade at C. W. Henry School and is looking forward to graduating next June. She states she’s had a very active year in things such as: softball, dance, art classes and activities with her Girl Scout Troop where they raised money all year. One of the goals of her Troop is for each member and a guest to go on a 15 day trip to Italy next year.   Kyra is looking forward to taking the trip with her Girl Scout Troop  to Italy with her mother, Denise.  This will be one of Kyra’s graduation gifts.

This summer Kyra attended the Moore College of Art in downtown Philadelphia which she enjoyed. Her grand mom was additionally proud and thankful that she was able to commute  safely by public transportation to center city like a “smart young lady.”  Kyra said she is looking into going to an ivy league boarding school for high school which she will present to her parents. The school has to specialize in math and the arts.   She reports that she has learned to cook, can cook: pork loin steaks, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts as well as  a few other things.  She is very happy she finally got braces a few weeks ago.

And finally, her cat who used to be a beautiful charcoal grey, is now a beautiful coal black. He is lots of fun!  Sometimes when they have trouble finding him around the house- he can be found in his bin of food that he somehow opens, feasting! Lol

Photos below are of  Kyra being recognized at the Fresh Artists Program at the School District of Philadelphia in June.   Prints of the Paintings were auctioned off as a fund raiser for under-privileged children.  She is shown standing next to her painting and with her mother, Denise Herbert.

+++++++++NEWS FROM CARMITA C. POE & FAMILY

998347_595437300488563_965111707_n

Carmita reports she is doing well, enjoying herself in her work as a promoter of up and coming musicians around town.  She continues to work in her business “Members Only, Travel and Entertainment.”   She had a great time at her recent trip 7/29 – 8/3/2013 to Winston Salem, NC at The National Black Theatre Festival.  She saw two plays every day and met a lot of interesting people.

She said her grandson, Keith is doing fine, he has been attending Cheney University since January.

Granddaughter, T’Ara enjoyed attending a tour of nine HBCU colleges in April with AKA Omega Chapter.  She is happy to be going into her senior year this year.  And Granddaughter, Tori is doing well, she is going into 8th grade.

Daughter, Lisa and her family moved next door to Carmita earlier this year.  Carmita said people always comment “oh how nice!”  Carmita likes her family nearby but said she can’t keep things in her house anymore – if they need an extra washer, car, paper towels or mayonnaise, etc.,  they don’t hesitate to come and get it.  Lol!
