CADET OF THE YEAR, CEDRIC HERBERT, JR.

photo (2)

Cedric Herbert has been in the ROTC for 3 years.  In his senior year, he received a trophy for Cadet of the year.  He also received several other trophies in his senior year for his outstanding performance in ROTC.   Cedric has always desired the “army” life just like his grandfather who served for 20+ years until he was hurt and received a Purple Heart.  His grandmother, Mary, said Cedric could have started in any rank he chose but he selected Infantry Combat, like his grandfather did.

While in high school, Cedric would get up for school at 5am sharp EVERY morning even though school didn’t start until 8:45am.  Not typical at all for most high school kids but very typical for this future army man. He graduated from high school on June 5, 2013 and will go for basic training on September 2013 at Fort Benning, Georgia to begin his career in the army.  CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES CEDRIC HERBERT, JR.

John and Mary are pleased to say their family is doing pretty well.  Their granddaughter, Kandzadie is doing fine- is currently living in Las Vegas with her mother. They want to congratulate their Grandson, Cedric on his  graduation from high school in June this year.  Cedric, Jr.  has decided to enlist in the United States Army.  He has signed up for Infantry Combat — like his grandfather did.  Peace and Blessings to the Family!

SARGEANT FIRST CLASS (E7) JOHN ROBERT HERBERT

Doc777John Robert Herbert retired from the United States Army in 1973 as a Sergeant First Class (E7) after 20 years of Service. He could have stayed on a little longer but he refused to train women. (Women were just being admitted to into the Armed Forces at that time- previously they were WACs or WAVES). John traveled widely in his stint which included his basic training in Columbia, S.C. and being stationed in Baltimore, M.D. and in Texas. He served 2 years in France; 2 years in Germany; Korea 1 year and 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. He was wounded in combat in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart for his bravery. John’s wife Mary traveled with him during many of his years in the Service, they married 7 years after he joined the Army. Overall, John describes his experience in the Service as positive.

THANK YOU JOHN R. HERBERT FOR YOUR DEDICATED SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY!!!

+++++++++++++++RAYMOND LAKE, UNITED STATES AIR FORCE

147a (2)

Raymond Lake stated he enlisted in the United States Air Force toward the end World War II in 1945.  Because he was up for the Draft, his brother told him it would be better for him to enlist because if he was drafted it was possible that he might be put in the Navy which he didn’t want to do- for fear of being thrown overboard. Lol!

Raymond served his Country from 1945 to 1947. The Military was still segregated but he still feels he had a very good experience there.  He said he basically was taught by doing  the required daily regiments gentlemanly things such as how to handle his surroundings, keeping things in order and how to dress, etc.

He was stationed at bases in Atlanta, Georgia; Topeka, Kansas and Arkansas.  He received an honorable discharge upon completion of his stint in the Service. He states he is now enjoying the benefits of having served in the Military. Thank You, Raymond for your Dedicated Service to our Country!

LEROY HERBERT — UNITED STATES AIR FORCE SERVICEMAN

Doc775

Leroy Herbert reports he enlisted in the United States Air Force in May 1952. He served during the Korean & Vietnam Wars from May 1952 until October 1973 at total of 21 years and 5 months.

In the U.S. Air Force he served in the Food Service Squadron as a Supply Sergeant for small unit & base and then in Air Transportation and Air Freight. He retired in Air Transportation Career Fields.

Leroy states initially he was stationed in Biloxi Mississippi. He then went to Perrin Air Force Base near Sherman, Texas. He moved on to Rhein-Main Air Force Base near Frankfurt, Germany. He served at Langely AFB in Langley, Virginia near Hampton; and then to Guam, Vietnam at the Anderson AFB. He was also stationed at Fort Waldron Beach, Florida at Eglin AFB and in Panama City, Florida at Tydnall AFB in 1973.  Thank you for your Service to our Country Leroy!

He states he’s enjoyed his tours of duty and describes it as one of the better things that ever happened to him. He has enjoyed being married to his wife, Bettye of 58 years. They celebrated their wedding anniversary on July 15.

When they returned home from the Service, Leroy worked at Michelin Tire Company retiring after 18 years and then at their business, Rainbow Child Care Center where he was Transportation Officer.

Bettye states she enjoyed celebrating her 79th Birthday on August 3rd. She has been doing pretty well except for occasional flare ups with vertigo. The couple is truly thankful about their children and grand children’s progress. Three of their grandchildren have finished college, are on their own in Atlanta, GA and in Charlotte, NC. Another of their grandchildren just returned home from Eton College in England where he studied International Business.

Leroy and Bettye’s daughter Angie & her husband Robert Gibson are enjoying their empty-nest, satisfied that everyone is moving along well.  Robert will retire from the US Reserves next month. They are all very thankful for that. CONGRATULATIONS ROBERT!!!
