Background of The Wilson Lake Herbert Family Reunion Song.   By Helen  Lake

When I composed this song I wrote into words the feelings we all no doubt experience each year when we meet and greet each other.

The last verse reflects how I was thinking about how God has truly blessed our family with the longevity of our family getting together from year to year, so I used the words “We Have Our GOD To Carry Us Through” in the last verse to give recognition to God for this.

I sang the song for the first time in the 1990’s at the home of John Roy and Carol Lake during a DC Chapter monthly family reunion meeting just to see what the members present thought about it.  Everyone enjoyed it and the rest is history.

********WILSON, LAKE, HERBERT FAMILY MEDICAL HISTORY*******

Greetings Family,

I have spoken to all of the grandchildren of the late Bessie and Fletcher Herbert. With the information I received from each relative, we have composed a listing of our family’s medical history from 1886 to 2011. This is 125 years of documented medical history. This is very important that we know – that we know what we have in our lineage, not only for ourselves but for the future generations. We need to inform our children and their children’s children. How many times have YOU been to the doctor for a routine visit and have been asked what is in your family medical history and  you may have replied, “I don’t know.” Well, it is never too late to gather that information.  The information compiled will help us to know what we need to be aware of in order to live a healthier life.

My mission is to inform the family of our genetic disposition.
We need to gather and document the medical history from the Wilson’s, Lake’s and Herbert’s collectively. Therefore, your information is vital to complete this medical history tree.

Please add your spouse’s medical history to your personal copy.

This health information only includes the direct descendants of the WLH lineage. I am excited and looking forward to your response.

A GREENVILLE, SC – PHILADELPHIA, PA CONNECTION

Back in 1928 and in the early 1940’s the upcoming Gospel Group, The Dixie Hummingbirds, was formed by James B. Davis in Greenville, South Carolina, and was later led by lead singer, Ira Tucker.  At one time before they went professional while still students, their stage name was The Sterling High School Quartet.  The group who was loved and admired by many began to be imitated by musicians such as Jackie Wilson and James Brown and also by the doo wop groups such as The Cardinals, The Falcons and The Orioles.  Ira Tucker of the group made it known that his group was the first to use birds as their names.

The Dixie Hummingbirds who became increasingly nationally known traveled in neighboring states and throughout the north. In 1942 they made Philadelphia, Pennsylvania their home.  Additionally some family members who were originally from Newberry, S.C. left Greenville and relocated in Philadelphia – North Philadelphia, during the late 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

William Herbert and Susie Williams came from Greenville, S.C. around 1935.  They later met in Philadelphia and were married; Susie’s parents: Lawson and Vinnie Williams came to Philadelphia; Susie’s sister, Alice Williams McField and her husband migrated to Philadelphia; and William introduced his sister Harnetha Herbert to her soon to be husband, Horace Crump in Philadelphia, PA.  There were other members of the Wilson, Lake and Herbert family who moved from Newberry and Greenville, SC to Philadelphia, PA also.  They were Elizabeth Herbert (Mother Bethel AME Church); Carrie Herbert; Margaret Herbert; Alfred Wilson (Cousin Boy); Elisha Herbert and Luecretia Herbert (White Rock Baptist Church)- they belonged to different other churches in the Philadelphia Area.

Second Pilgrim Baptist Church’ congregation and members of the community consisted of many former residents of Greenville, SC.  Their church home, located at 15th & Poplar Streets, is where they could often hear The Dixie Hummingbirds sing.  The group were also frequently in concert at the MET, Broad and Poplar Streets appearing with other well known Gospel Groups.

The Dixie Hummingbirds were honored in 2005 by the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia with a large painted mural across the street from Second Pilgrim Baptist Church.  The mural is one of more than 3000 murals that are proudly displayed around the City of Philadelphia.

THE BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT-Lessons Learned from THE WILSON, LAKE, HERBERT FAMILY

The Best Advice I Ever Got – Lessons Learned FROM THE WILSON, LAKE & HERBERT FAMILY

***Pamela Herbert Lee: “My Dad, Ralph Herbert told me that I could be a leader or a follower and that I had to decide which I would be!”

***Michelle Herbert Epps: “The best advice I ever received and I still practice today was given to me by my dad, Earnest Herbert, Sr. He still says it to this day! ‘Complaining won’t change anything, so why bother complaining.’ His saying is timeless and in line with the Bible. Complaining keeps you focused on the problem, which you don’t want to do!”

***Christopher Kareem Herbert: “Speak things into existence!”

***Dara E. Herbert: “Focus and finish!”, advice from her dad, Darryl F. Herbert.

***Earnest Herbert, Sr.Whatever you do, be the best you can be at it!” told to him by his maternal grand-pop, the late, Lawson Williams.

***Helen Lake: Reflecting back over the years, the best advice I ever got was to “Treat others as you want to be treated” and “Don’t let the sun set with you in a provoked state.” There is a lot of practical value when these bits of advice are applied in your life.

***Latoya Hollingsworth Logan: Trust in the lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

***Terri Barnum Herbert: Advice given by her mother, the late, Dorothy Barnum, “Always keep your receipts; pay your bills on time and punctuality is important!”

***Devyn M. Herbert: “The only way out is the way through! ” advice from her dad, Darryl F. Herbert.

***Michael Herbert, Jr. “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us!”

***Denzel Herbert: Life’s too short to mess with ugly women!” (LOL) advice given to him by his father, Chris Herbert, Sr.

***Ralph Herbert, Sr. “W hat you mean your back hurt, you ain’t got no back – you ain’t got nothing but gristle!” -told to him by his father, the late, William Herbert. (that meant. . . keep it movin!!!!)

***Lisa Poe Dickens: “Remember . . . in my absence, God sees all things!” Advice from her mom, Carmita Crowder Poe!”

***Michael Herbert, Sr. My advice to the young — “listen to your parents— that is instant wisdom!”

***Lavette Fitts: “JUST SMILE!”

***Marie Hodge Griffin: “Follow the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

***Susie Williams Herbert: Trust in God and do good!” advice from her mother, the late, Elizabeth Williams.

***Ralph Herbert, Jr. “Follow your heart. Keep your butt on the block! And your outer beauty doesn’t last, but your inner beauty does!” Heard from his mom, Anita Herbert and dad, Ralph Herbert, Sr.

***Billy Herbert: “If you listen, you might learn something and think before you speak!”

***Sophia Herbert: “Remember, what goes around, comes around!”

***Earnest Herbert, Jr. He says he’s learned along the way that, “the Lord will never put more on you than you can bear. And you have to keep the faith!”

***Gloria Leaks Gaymon: As told to her by her paternal grandmother, the late, Lillian Spearman Leaks, “Go to school and get an education!”

***Darryl F. Herbert:  “If you can’t be used; you’re useless!” Heard from his pop, Fletcher Herbert.

***Stephanie Tadlock: Her mother, Doloris Tadlock always told her, “Follow the golden rule and don’t act up in school because if you act up . . . I’ am going to act out!”

***Denise Jones Herbert: “Be kind to others”

***Doloris Herbert Tadlock: Her mom, the late Eunice Herbert would tell her: “I can be your best friend or your worst enemy!”

***Patricia Haley Hawkins: “Walk out on faith, and perseverance is faith. Also, P.U.S.H. . . . Pray Until Something Happens!”

***Christopher W. Herbert, Sr. He says he  learned from his grandfather, the late, William Herbert, Sr. “the importance of helping others – and Grand pop practiced what he preached. He was an honorable man!”

***Fletcher Herbert: His mom, the late, Susie Williams Herbert used to tell him to “remember to take care of your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves!”

***Mary Aydlett Herbert: Told to her by her mother, the late, Regina Aydlett, “Once a task is begun, never leave it until it’s done; be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.”

****************SHE WAS IMPRESSED BY OUR FAMILY**************

Dr. Ione Vargus became very involved with our family in 1986 around our family reunions.  She was impressed that we, the Wilson, Lake, Herbert Family, had begun having Reunions in 1968-69, years before Alex Haley’s “Roots” was published (1976) and that our Reunions were so organized with Chapters in many cities.  Our Reunions, primarily all 2 or 3 days long on Labor Day weekend, were always so well done and enjoyed by our family every year.

Dr. Vargus interviewed us and traveled with us on occasion and was our Reunion guest speaker at  The Wilson, Lake, Herbert’s and The Aydlett Family Reunions.  Several of us spoke at her Family Reunion Workshops and she included information about the WLH Family in one of her books and other publications. The family was also featured in a Philadelphia  Inquirer Newspaper article about Family Reunions. Carmita Crowder Poe is/was a personal friend of hers.  Patricia Haley Hawkins, who was  a graduate of Temple University’s School of Social Administration, knew her also.

Dr. Ione Vargus, Carmita C. Poe and friend

The following is info from a Website Blog by Vernon M. Herron about Dr. Ione Vargus “The Mother of Family Reunions,” on April 1, 2010.

In June 1990, Claude Lewis editorial writer of The Philadelphia Inquirer Newspaper wrote, “If Alex Haley can be called the Father of Family Reunions, Dr. Ione D. Vargus can be called the Mother of Family Reunions.” In that same year, The Family Reunion Institute emerged because of the many requests for information after two previous African American Family Reunion Conferences. The conference planning committee recognized from the responses and from requests for service and information, that it could begin to work with families outside of traditional family agency structures. However, it would need to have a more organized and permanent existence. Thus, the Institute was formally established at the School of Social Administration at Temple University. Its administrator was Dr. Ione D. Vargus, Professor Emeritus, formally the acting Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Temple University, the School of Social Administration for a total of seventeen years.

She was Temple’s first African American as well as the first female academic Dean. Dr. Vargus now serves as a volunteer to the organization.

Dr. Vargus began her research on African American family reunions in 1986. She traveled the east coast, north and south to attend family Reunions for Conferences on African American Reunions. She continues collecting information about families and their reunions.

Dr. Vargus has published a number of different topics and has been profiled and/or quoted in many local and national magazines and newspapers.
