~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~MY KITCHEN GARDEN~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s early spring (2011); I’m unemployed, hurt, restless and a bit angry. When I think of the factors leading to my being on chill from earning an income that would support my basic needs, those feelings are triggered. My heart did three more deep twists and I thought I MUST find SOMETHING to DO, some way to spend my time constructively that allowed me to meet some basic needs, like eating.  HEY, WHY NOT!  I thought to myself. It’s a great time to start the KITCHEN GARDEN I’d dreamed of having. I am HERE in this house with an open backyard area that has been left unattended aside from paying monthly to have the weeds cut. I could just as well WORK THE LAND and PRODUCE MY PRODUCE.
Ambitious and a true visionary, I planted a variety of foods and herbs including a fruit for dessert! I planted spinach, squash, cucumbers, collards, eggplant, onions, carrots, string beans, mint, watermelon, three types of peppers including bells; tomatoes, parsley, dill, basil, rosemary, marjoram and sweet potatoes. I had a great harvest for my first try at growing my own food source and learned that I COULD DO IT…AND..I did do it.
I also learned about composting. The truest beauty of my learning experience was see how we generally throw out as “garbage” the food scrapes and peelings, but when returned it to its source the earth, it replenishes, restores and repairs any damage done to it.
I would LOVE TO WORK WITH MY FAMILY towards broadening the scope of having KITCHEN GARDENS running and to teach our young people HOW TO provide for SELF.  To do so with the aid and support of FAMILY, I imagine will provide an unspeakable accomplishment and production of pure and sheer JOY for all involved.
Another primary reason for starting my kitchen garden has to do with the ‘work’ I have put together and am trying to develop for marketing AND gives me the opportunity to PRACTICE what I PREACH AND TEACH and that is, becoming actively engaged in constructive activity to heal from traumatic stress and the loss of my job.  The therapeutic benefits of peaceful garden environments have been understood since ancient times and it was this peace I was seeking.  In many circles, this practice for this purpose is known has “horticulture therapy” and it was the perfect tool for me because of the dual purpose served, ability to feed myself and have a place of peace that I could create for myself and be independent of others.  And so began…my Garden Project.
I humbly submit this to the WLH family for inclusion in the newsletter.  I share my story and my experiences in this family to help us see what things we want to fix for the generations to come.
~~~~~~~A GREENVILLE, SC – PHILADELPHIA, PA CONNECTION~~~~~

A GREENVILLE, SC – PHILADELPHIA, PA CONNECTION

Back in 1928 and in the early 1940’s the upcoming Gospel Group, The Dixie Hummingbirds, was formed by James B. Davis in Greenville, South Carolina, and was later led by lead singer, Ira Tucker.  At one time before they went professional while still students, their stage name was The Sterling High School Quartet.  The group who was loved and admired by many began to be imitated by musicians such as Jackie Wilson and James Brown and also by the doo wop groups such as The Cardinals, The Falcons and The Orioles.  Ira Tucker of the group made it known that his group was the first to use birds as their names.

The Dixie Hummingbirds who became increasingly nationally known traveled in neighboring states and throughout the north. In 1942 they made Philadelphia, Pennsylvania their home.  Additionally some family members who were originally from Newberry, S.C. left Greenville and relocated in Philadelphia – North Philadelphia, during the late 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

William Herbert and Susie Williams came from Greenville, S.C. around 1935.  They later met in Philadelphia and were married; Susie’s parents: Lawson and Vinnie Williams came to Philadelphia; Susie’s sister, Alice Williams McField and her husband migrated to Philadelphia; and William introduced his sister Harnetha Herbert to her soon to be husband, Horace Crump in Philadelphia, PA.  There were other members of the Wilson, Lake and Herbert family who moved from Newberry and Greenville, SC to Philadelphia, PA also.  They were Elizabeth Herbert (Mother Bethel AME Church); Carrie Herbert; Margaret Herbert; Alfred Wilson (Cousin Boy); Elisha Herbert and Luecretia Herbert (White Rock Baptist Church)- they belonged to different other churches in the Philadelphia Area.

Second Pilgrim Baptist Church’ congregation and members of the community consisted of many former residents of Greenville, SC.  Their church home, located at 15th & Poplar Streets, is where they could often hear The Dixie Hummingbirds sing.  The group were also frequently in concert at the MET, Broad and Poplar Streets appearing with other well known Gospel Groups.

The Dixie Hummingbirds were honored in 2005 by the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia with a large painted mural across the street from Second Pilgrim Baptist Church.  The mural is one of more than 3000 murals that are proudly displayed around the City of Philadelphia.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~TAMIKA AND HUMPHREY QUAO~~~~~~~~~~
“I would like to include in the family Newsletter that I won the “Teacher of the Year” Award for the 2010-2011 school year at Camden’s Pride Charter School. It was such an honor because I am a new teacher at this school (since March 15, 2010) and I am truly blessed to have been able to touch so many lives in such a short period of time. This award helps to confirm that I am doing God’s work and this is exactly where he wants me to be.”
“Humphrey and I also just celebrated our first Anniversary on July 3rd. It was very exciting. We spent the weekend at National Harbor, Maryland. It is a fairly new harbor and very nice. If you need a quick getaway try there, we loved it!”
“People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”
