Burr Lake (circa 1865-1929) and Mary Jane Wilson Lake (b. 1867-) of Newberry, SC were the parents of nine children: Bessie, (1/2/1886- 3/6/1983); Osborne; Alfred; Earl; Mary (7/27/1902-1/8/1980); Laura; Murt; George and Louvenia Lake (11/12/1906 – 10/6/1985).

According to Louvenia Lake Harris’ Obituary, she was the youngest of 17 children born to Burr and Mary Lake. Nine of their children survived.

William Herbert, Sr. (6/11/1909 – 8/18/2005) stated that during a period in his life after his father, Fletcher Herbert (1886-1916 ? ), had passed, the family moved to Grandpa Burr Lake’s place in Newberry County. The family included William (who was the oldest son) and his mother Bessie Lake Herbert (1/2/1886 – 3/6/1983) and his sisters: Harneatha Herbert Crump (7/29/1906 – 1/20/1998); Willie Mae Herbert Jeter (11/11/1907 – 11/8/1999); Lucretia Herbert Haley (12/24/1916 – 4/29/1991); Bessie Herbert (9/6/1914 – 3/22/2001) and brothers: twins, Elijah Herbert (4/1/1910 – 5/5/1982) and Elisha Herbert (4/1/1910 – 12/1990) and Amos Herbert (3/16/1916 – 1/2/1991). His mother, Bessie, sometimes worked in the city of Greenville, SC. Their beloved grandmother, Mary, had passed away years prior to that. William described Burr Lake as a very strong good man, extremely gifted in math – he could easily calculate numbers in his head. He said as a young boy when they went to town to sell their harvest from the farm, he was just amazed and proud looking at him “wheeling and dealing with people.” He strongly admired and loved his grandfather who he described as ‘God Fearing’ and a very stern parent who taught him his strong work ethic.
